Rainwater Collection Strategies
Where Water Use Restrictions meet Eco-friendly Solutions

Fall 2007 - Lake Lanier (One of the main water sources for the City of Atlanta)

Benefits and Effectiveness:

  • Rain barrels and cisterns can reduce water demand for irrigation, car washing, or other non-potable uses.

  • Property owners save money on their water bills and public water systems experience lower peak water demand and less stress on local water supplies.

  • Property owners who have cisterns and rain barrels can use stored water for landscape purposes, even during outdoor watering bans.

  • If installed and used properly, rain barrels and cisterns can reduce storm water runoff volume through retention, and will also help to reduce the peak discharge rate through retention.

BEFORE - This mostly paved campus flushed polluted runoff into Santa Monica Bay and increased the heat-island effect.

UNDERGROUND STORAGE - The cistern holds 110,000 gallons of rainwater, which is used for irrigating the campus, thus decreasing the city's need for imported water (and its unnecessary use of potable water).

AFTER - A grassy playing field over the cistern, as well as new trees, gardens and creek-like swales throughout the campus, help capture storm water, improve air quality and cool the campus.  (A pre-treatment unit was also incorporated to filter sediment, garbage and motor oil.)

GMI is not aligned to a particular cistern manufacturer, which allows our projects to be customized and function-specific.
